Less Sleep, More Energy

“I had a hard time staying awake in that meeting,” I said to Marvin. “If I were home, this would be around the time I take my afternoon nap.” A few days before this conversation, Marvin had discovered the pleasure of an afternoon doze, surprised that he was able to fall asleep and surprised he felt so refreshed afterwards. Like many people, Marvin typically finds it difficult to fall asleep unless he’s completely exhausted. “Most people don’t know how to relax,” I told him. “So they can’t fall asleep unless they’re completely drained.”
We are accustomed in this society (pushed really, I guess) to stay up all day and sleep all night (or vice versa), which is rather unnatural. Several periods of rest and sleep throughout the day and night is more natural (85% of the animal kingdom sleeps this way). The same holds true for eating and drinking. By the time you get hungry or thirsty, you have already gone some several hours in a state of imbalance and depletion. The hunger pangs, the thirst, the exhaustion bring to your attention the fact that you have neglected your energetic needs. By eating, drinking and sleeping in appropriate cycles throughout the day, you should not under normal circumstances get hungry, thirsty or sleepy, and you should feel more energized.
The subtle bodies and psychic centers of the human energy system also benefit from frequent rest and sleep. There is more frequent stimulation of these energies, more opportunities to process the emotional energies of the day, and more frequent direct contact with the non-physical realms. Years ago after reading a book entitled “Seth Speaks,” I experimented with changing my sleeping patterns, adding it to my routine of spiritual practice. The results were amazing.
I usually woke up around 6 a.m. after having slept about 2 - 4 hours–relying on my body’s internal wisdom about when it was ready to become active again. I would do some self-healing work, meditation and journaling for 1 - 2.5 hours. I took a 1 or 2 hour nap in the afternoon, and did at least an hour of deep meditation in the evening (the more of this I did, the less sleep I required). I did another self-healing session before going to bed around 3 am or so. My energy stayed very high. My Higher Mind functions were very acute. Programming my dreams was very easy. Lucid dreams and out-of-body experiences were also commonplace. (Leonardo daVinci is reported to have napped for 20 minutes every 3 hours. A modified version of this—30 minutes of sleep every 4 hours—has been used during NASA spaceflights). Sleeping frequently for shorter periods of time had a profound impact on my personal and spiritual development.
To the extent that you are able, I highly recommend experimenting with your sleeping, eating and drinking patterns. Investigate what happens when you regularly charge your “batteries” before allowing them to become depleted.
