“This year is it!” That’s what someone recently told me about having to make several key decisions. Things were coming to a head in their life. Things were coming to a head with their career. And now things were also coming to a head with their relationship. Now what? “Now meditation,” was my response. Meditation can make all the difference in what kind of head life-altering situations come to, how well you handle them,  and how they play out from there. So I’m teaching how to Transform Your Life, Leadership & Relationships Through Meditation at the City College of New York  Thursday, May 17 – July 19.

RELATIONSHIPS
I’ve been asked so frequently if and how meditation can improve relationships that I had to cover this topic as part of our upcoming program. Relationships are a huge source of stress for many. In fact, having better relationships was the #1 goal that New Yorkers said eluded them in a Stress in America report published by the American Psychological  Association. Meditation can help improve relationships in a number of ways. It helps to bring greater focus, clarity, wisdom and harmony to a relationship. It helps to minimize negative relationship patterns, emotional volatility and other issues that stress the relationship. And it helps couples to evolve both individually and together. Couples who take this class together will get a lot of the class and have an opportunity to work hands-on to transform their relationship through meditation during each week of the program.

LEADERSHIP
Many people who have taken meditation or self-development classes with me in the past  have been leaders or entrepreneurs of some kind (32% percent of entrepreneurs  meditate according to the Huffington Post). Many of them, however (even if they have had some experience meditating), seem surprised when I say that meditation can have a significant impact on how and why you lead the way you do (or don’t lead as the case may be).

Leaders who explore meditation often start out seeking to minimize the physical and  psychological stresses that arise  from the challenges, frustrations, and responsibilities of leading people, projects and businesses. But if leaders are able to grow beyond  this one oft-touted benefit and into the more advanced applications of meditation, they begin to recognize some of the other values of meditation to:

  • bring greater focus, clarity, and wisdom to their leadership
  • maximize their effectiveness and results
  • address personal patterns, issues, and blocks that negatively affect their strength, authenticity and success as a leader

Leadership can be transformed through meditation because meditation can evolve you and close the disconnect between the person you are and the leader you want or need to be. This is, of course, one of many things participants will learn do in the Meditation Program @ City College. And they will have an opportunity to actively transform their leadership (among other things) through meditation from week to week during the class.

LIFE
To someone who has never meditated or to a meditator who has not yet reached depth in their meditation, meditation may not seem all that important an activity compared with the demands and stresses of everyday life. In many people’s minds, meditation is the intermission from their life. They may not recognize its power to help confront life and the day-to-day issues that arise. An inconsiderate neighbor or roommate, resolving pressing financial issues, addressing an insecurity, pain, shortcoming, or conflict…meditation can be used to deal with these things head on, more efficiently, expediently, masterfully, and healthfully than without the benefit of meditation.

When allowed  to really do its thing, meditation is a transformational agent that has a cumulative effect. The key, however, is understanding what it does, and how not to interfere with that. Which many do inadvertently by not really understanding how certain techniques may help or hinder your process, depending on where you are in your process. Meditation transforms your life because when done effectively, it transforms you down to your core. It makes you better in unimaginable ways. It’s hard to describe what “better” is because in the context of meditation, better is so much more than just being a better version of yourself and it even goes beyond becoming the grandest ideal of yourself. That’s what we’re tapping into in our meditation class…it will be an invaluable experience.
