Can meditation help me deal with crazy people?
February 3, 2012
On Wednesday, I was at the Open House for The City College of New York’s Continuing and Professional Studies program. I was answering questions about meditation and the meditation class I’ll be teaching at City College starting March 15. The most popular question by far was, “Can meditation help me deal with crazy people?” Every time it was asked, there was laughter on both sides, but the question was no joke. They were completely serious.
“Crazy” people are part of the human experience, and apparently, they’re really getting on New Yorkers’ nerves. Having better relationships, was the #1 goal that New Yorkers said eluded them in a Stress in America report published by the American Psychological Association. So I shouldn’t have been completely surprised that this was the theme of the day from prospective students.
“They may be crazy,” I replied to one lady who was getting fed up with some of her business clients’ attitudes “but that doesn’t mean you have to be. One of the benefits of meditation is the ability to stay centered, in your peace and on your focus, even though people around are doing things that make no sense. You get a much clearer idea of how to interact with those people effectively without becoming negatively affected by it yourself.”
Two days later, I had a similar conversation with a couple asking if taking my class together would help their rocky relationship. “Definitely,” I said. “That’s a great idea.” Meditation can not only evolve the way a couple interacts, but it can help each couple to gain a deeper understanding of who and how they are in the relationship, how this affects the quality and direction of the relationship, and what to do to organically grow the relationship. Meditation is certainly a powerful tool for relationship transformation.

Life is so much better when you just deal with it
January 27, 2012
In anticipation of some unpleasant truth or other dramatically ill-fated outcome that we might imagine, we sometimes procrastinate, stress over, or just ignore a task or situation altogether. When we finally grey around to dealing with it, however, we may realize, “oh, that wasn’t so bad,”–except for the fact that all the waiting and delaying has made things worse. So now we have to contend with a whole new set of problems that wouldn’t have happened had we just handled everything immediately and directly from the beginning. Save yourself unnecessary hassle. The next time there’s a problem or a challenge, just deal with it.
Effectiveness, Not Perfection, is the Name of the Game
January 20, 2012
I hope you’re not standing in your way or sitting on untapped treasure and potential while waiting for something to be “perfect,” “good enough” or unnecessarily impressive. I can understand why you might want to do that. But I hope you can understand why others on the same road might be passing you by while you wait, or why your dreams might still be on the shelf even after all this time. If you’re stuck, stalled, disappointed or frustrated with your progress or level of manifestation in some endeavor, my advice to you today is to shift your focus to being effective. Effectiveness might not always be pretty or polished, but it works. And that’s the point. It’s out there and it’s generating momentum. Don’t waste anymore time, money or effort waiting for everything to be “just right.” Be deliberate about making the moves that will most effectively produce positive results right now. [Read more]
Dr. M Recommends: Conscious Dreaming by R. Moss
May 20, 2011
I wanted to improve my conscious and lucid dreaming skills and came across this book. The first night that I received it, I put it under my pillow without having read one word. That night, I had a lucid dream. Powerful! Conscious Dreaming by Robert Moss is one of the best dreaming books I’ve come across. The techniques are highly effective for working successfully with your dream material and your dream awareness. And I’ve read things in his book that I’ve not come across elsewhere (I love when that happens!). I recommended this book to the participants in the Transformation, Meditation & Dreaming Workshop I run for the Inner LIfe Society. If you’re interested in consciously integrating your dreaming experience into your spiritual practice, get this book! One of the techniques I used from the book (with a slight modification) produced an incredible catharis and healing of a deep, long-standing issue. I’ll share it at our an upcoming workshop.
